Your Guide to Phoenix Ceramic Tile Floor Restoration

Your Guide to Phoenix Ceramic Tile Floor Restoration

Guest Blog Written By:

Desert Tile and Grout Care – Owner Dan Milne

Ceramic tile is a great choice for your Phoenix floors because it is durable and resistant to scratching and temperature changes. You can buy it in a wide variety of colors and sizes, allowing you to create the look you want for your kitchen, bathroom, outdoor patio, or any other room of your home. You can tile your entire Phoenix home if you have the budget and the inclination.

Yet ceramic floors are not indestructible. They can scratch, and they can stain. The grout, in particular, can become stained from dirt, liquids and mildew, bringing down the look of your whole floor. Regular Phoenix tile and grout cleaning is essential to keep your floors looking good.

your-guide-to-phoenix-tile-floor-restorationShould your floors become stained or damaged despite your best efforts at keeping them clean and maintaining them, you can hire the professionals for ceramic tile floor restoration. Here are a few things that you or a professional may be able to do to restore your ceramic tile floors:

Strip the Floor

Many ceramic tile floors are coated with a sealer or wax that is meant to protect the floor and sometimes to give it shine. Before the floor can be restored, this old coating has to be completely removed.

If you are trying to do this step yourself, you need to be careful that you don’t use any products or tools that actually damage the floor or remove some of the color or other beneficial elements of the floor. This is just one of the reasons why it’s often better to hire a professional for your Phoenix ceramic tile and grout cleaning .

Remove Mineral Deposits

Over time, minerals from rain or even just the dirt that you track in with your shoes can deposit on the floor and create discoloration. You may not actually have dirt on your floors — just layers of mineral buildup.

You can’t remove these minerals with regular floor cleaners. You need special cleaners that are designed to cut through the buildup and remove those hardened minerals. Again, you must be careful to choose the right mineral cleaner for your floors or else you risk damaging the ceramic tile.

Clean the Grout

Dirty grout can make your floors look old and dirty even if the tile itself is in great shape. You need to clean the grout thoroughly with a professional-strength cleaner that is specifically designed for grout. When you are done cleaning, you need to seal the grout to reduce the amount of dirt buildup you will get going forward.

importance-phoenix-tile-grout-cleaningPreventing Floor Damage

Don’t wait until your floors are stained or damaged to try to restore them. Instead, take good care of them and prevent the need for professional restorative services.

Here are a few things you can do:

  • Sweep and vacuum regularly. Otherwise, debris will build up and stain the floors. Dirt and other debris can also scratch the floors when you walk on it.
  • Use only mild cleansers. Check manufacturer instructions to know what products are safe for the floor.
  • Clean spills immediately. Failing to do so could allow stains to set or mildew to form.
  • Use doormats to minimize the dirt and other debris that is tracked onto the floors.
  • Put pads or other protectors under all furniture. This will minimize scratching to the floor.
  • Close the curtains and blinds during the day to minimize fading from UV rays.
  • Seal floors regularly to protect against damage. Also seal the grout.
  • Be careful when moving furniture or other heavy objects. Never drag items across floors, which could scratch or gouge them.

The better you can care for your ceramic tile floors, the longer they will last and the more beautiful they will be.

Why Hardwood Flooring?

Why Hardwood Flooring?

…And other advice for people considering hardwood flooring

Utilizing our services for the 3rd time, Hank is a wonderful repeat customer. We recently asked Hank 4 questions. He kindly answered all of them, including “Why Hardwood Flooring?” Thank you for your time, Hank! enmar hardwood flooring logo

How much research did you do before ultimately choosing Enmar?

Hank: I had another vendor who probably would have been good, but as I was driving on Germann Rd. in Gilbert, I saw the “Hardwood Flooring” sign out front and thought I would see what all the fuss was about. I met Brian and we hit it off. He has never been pushy and wanted me to get exactly what I wanted. I spent several months to make the decision. Enmar’s installers are top-notch and Brian is top-notch. What more could I ask for?

Are you happy with your Enmar experience?

Hank: I wouldn’t ask anyone else to bid on the job. I was so pleased…that my 1-bedroom wood floor has turned into wood flooring in my entire home.

What advice do you have for people who are considering hardwood flooring?

Hank: Go with a reputable person [company] with good products. I have seen inexpensive wood samples from Home Depot, but the wood is thinner and the foundation is one sheet of pressboard. Enmar’s wood products are thick. There is no comparison to the high quality at Enmar.

Why hardwood flooring?

Hank: Wood flooring is nice; it has a warm feel. Every time I look at my wood floor, it looks different. At different times of the day, I notice different colors…different details (at least with the wood that I chose). Wood flooring feels alive versus dead with other products like tile or laminate.

Tips From an Enmar Hardwood Flooring Customer

Tips From an Enmar Hardwood Flooring Customer

In hopes to help those seeking guidance in their hardwood flooring journey, we asked a recent customer a series of questions. Thank you to Stephanie H. for sharing! enmar flooring stephanie h

What led you to choose hardwood flooring for your home?

Stephanie: Both my husband and I grew up in houses with hardwood floors, so we liked the idea of hardwood over carpet or tile. We got to a point where we disliked our carpet so much (even after thorough cleanings) that we caved in and decided we wanted one type of flooring to unify our whole first floor.

What led you to go with Enmar?

Stephanie: We were initially referred to Enmar by a family friend who knew the original owner (also named Brian I believe.) So we used Enmar to install hardwood in our first house …but then we moved out shortly after into a bigger home since we were starting a family. Three years later I was on the hunt to replace the flooring in our new house and obviously decided to include Enmar during my hunt for reasonable quotes.

What tips do you have for people interested in wood flooring?

Stephanie:

1. Take the time to bring home as many samples as your heart desires and keep them to see them on your floors during all different times of the day.

2. You don’t always have to go crazy expensive on the floor to get one that will last 20+ years…you just have to know that you have to take care of your investment.

3. The higher the sheen on the wood, the more obvious spots, scratches, and stains are…so if you want something a bit more manageable, pick a wood with a matte sheen.

4. If you plan on being able to sell your house, don’t spend money on a hardwood floor that is too customized or trendy…classic hardwood helped us sell our first house in 1 day and has us getting offers on our current house, even though it is not even for sale!

5. We did NOT install the hardwood in our kitchen or laundry room and, in hindsight, that was the best decision ever for a household with two kids.

6. Opt for new baseboards. Removing and replacing old baseboards do not look good against new wood flooring.

What is your favorite thing about your new wood floor?

Stephanie: I love how having one type of floor really makes our first floor look bigger. We get compliments all the time about how we managed to put amazing character into a track home (we also installed stone on a few interior walls before we had the wood put in). The whole house seems warm with hardwood flooring; not as cold and sterile as tile can be.

6 Answers About Wood Flooring

Why Wood Flooring?

And Other Hardwood Flooring Questions

In an effort to help you in your wood-shopping venture, we politely asked our customer, Jeff N., to share his ENMAR Hardwood Flooring experience. Lucky us, he gladly obliged.

1) What led you to choose hardwood flooring over other flooring options?

JEFF: Hardwood floors are classier. I prefer the more natural look in the downstairs living area over synthetic products such as laminate or carpet. I do have tile downstairs and the wood is a perfect contrast for our home. It just feels good and homey. My fiancé says she likes how the wood feels on her feet.

2) Why did you choose ENMAR Hardwood Flooring over other flooring companies?

JEFF: ENMAR’s friendly, professional service can’t be beat. My questions were answered with so much knowledge that when I shopped around, I learned that many other companies didn’t install wood flooring the way it should be installed. For example, other companies wanted to install a bumper/separator between the tile and wood, which was tacky and unsafe. These companies either don’t know how to install properly so that the wood is flush with the tile, or they are lazy. Either way, we trusted ENMAR.

3) Are you happy with ENMAR now that your floor has been installed?

JEFF: Yes! Our flooring was installed so efficiently…no mess, no clutter, prompt, with a fast turn-around time. Had we went with anyone else, we would not have our wood/carpet stairs because not one other company recommended we incorporate carpet to save us money. ENMAR suggested the idea and showed us an example and we loved it! It gave us exactly what we wanted with a reasonable price tag!!

4) What would you tell people who are considering hardwood flooring?

JEFF: I would tell people that hardwood flooring is cool…it sets you apart from all the other homes. I would also tell people to do your research and include ENMAR in your research…you will find that ENMAR is the true expert in the wood flooring business…and you will be happy.

5) What tip do you have for people who aren’t sure which type of wood to choose?

JEFF: Make use of ENMAR’s great showroom of samples. If you want wood installed next to tile and/or carpet, bring in a tile and/or carpet sample. Ask to bring home at least 4 wood samples and look at them at different times of the day, in different light. Eliminate the wood samples that you know won’t work and trade them in for a few more wood flooring pieces. Give yourself 1-2 days for this process until you know, for certain, which wood type is THE ONE. We ended up choosing a wood species/color that we never would have thought of…and the one we thought for sure would have worked well in our home did not match at all. Trust Brian’s advice, too.

6) What is your favorite thing about your wood floor?

JEFF: I love the look and I love the compliments we receive when guests are over. Nobody has wood flooring these days because they have the impression that it is expensive and that it scratches easily. Wood flooring is not expensive when you compare it to other nice flooring options (laminate is NOT nice). It’s not any more expensive than nice tile or nice carpet! We placed $2 felt stickers underneath our furniture, so we have no worries about scratches because nobody here is walking around in heavy, sharp shoes either! We have a Doberman and have ZERO issues.

Engineered Hardwood Vs. Laminate

Engineered Hardwood Vs. Laminate

What is engineered wood? How is it different than laminate?

We have many people who come into our store and are uncertain what the differences are between engineered hardwood flooring and laminate flooring. Let’s face it, if you are choosing to put new floors into your home, it is a huge investment and you want to ensure you have all the facts to assist you in making an educated decision.

There is a misconception that engineered hardwood flooring is not “real wood”. Engineered hardwood is real hardwood that has been bonded to a substructure, normally a type of plywood. Engineered hardwood flooring is more stable during changes in humidity.

engineered wood

Engineered Hardwood Flooring Samples

The top layer or “wear layer” of engineered flooring can vary anywhere from below 2mm of thickness to very substantial 6mm thickness. When it comes to refinishing hardwood floors, depending on the thickness of the wear layer, engineered flooring can also be sanded and refinished if there is damage to the floor.

Laminate flooring is a multi layer synthetic product that “simulates” the look of hardwood by using a photographic image under a clear protective layer. The inner core of laminate is normally a resin and fiberboard. Laminate flooring cannot be sanded in any way if repairs are required so you would have to replace the board. Laminate has been described as sounding hollow under foot, you will not get that with engineered hardwood flooring that is glued to your concrete slab.

Some feel there is more maintenance to real hardwood than laminate. This is not true as all that is required is a lint free dry mop for quick daily cleaning and a damp mop for a deeper clean. This a also applicable to laminate as well.

8 Ways to Maintain Your Phoenix Hardwood Flooring

How to Care for Your Phoenix Hardwood Flooring

hardwood floor installation

We get asked a lot about what is the best method to take care of newly installed Phoenix hardwood flooring. Choosing hardwood flooring is an investment in your home, so here are some helpful tips from your friends at ENMAR Hardwood Flooring to keep your Phoenix hardwood flooring looking new and to provide longevity after your hardwood floor installation is complete.

  1. If it is a freshly sanded and refinished floor, do not place area rugs on your newly finished floor for one to two weeks to allow for complete curing of the finish.
  2. Sand, dirt and grit have abrasive particles; tracking these particles onto your Phoenix hardwood flooring will cause your finish to wear faster and make your floors lose their shine.
  3. An excessive amount of water can make your wood floors swell and cup. It can also cause cracks to turn discolor. Clean up any water on your floors as soon as possible.
  4. The nails of large pets can cause scratches on your Phoenix hardwood flooring, but there are products on the market that can be put on the nails of large pets (like a nail polish) that will reduce scratching or gouging. If your pet has an accident on the floor, clean it up immediately as urine is an acid and it will leave a permanent stain. How to maintain hardwood flooring
  5. After your hardwood floor installation, it is recommended that you use floor protectors under chair legs and other furniture to prevent scratching.
  6. Do NOT clean the floor with any wax related products, furniture polishes, vinegar, ammonia or pine cleaners. Not only are they less effective cleaners, they may dull your finish and it may require hardwood floor repair.
  7. Always make sure plants are in water proof containers.
  8. Whether it is prefinished hardwood flooring or solid hardwood flooring (reclaimed hardwood flooring), the humidity in your home is very important to your Phoenix hardwood flooring. Unless the relative humidity in your home is kept between 35% and 55%, the wood floor can check or shrink forming cracks in the surface.  An atmosphere that is too dry may also void the manufacturer’s warranty.

Is Engineered Hardwood Flooring “REAL” Hardwood?

Let’s talk a little bit about Engineered Hardwood

Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Come visit us to see more samples of engineered hardwood flooring

We have a lot of people who come to our ENMAR Hardwood Flooring Gilbert store wanting to buy hardwood flooring who have the misconception that engineered flooring is not real hardwood.

Let’s set the record straight on this: engineered hardwood flooring is real hardwood!!

Engineered flooring is real hardwood that has been bonded onto a substructure, normally a type of plywood. The plywood allows for greater structural integrity in your floor, and our engineered Gilbert hardwood flooring is more stable during changes in humidity.

When shopping for Phoenix hardwood flooring in today’s market, a large portion of what you are seeing is engineered flooring; this Phoenix hardwood flooring can be used on all levels in your home. Most homes here in Arizona are built on concrete slabs and the engineered flooring can be laid directly onto the concrete slab so long as there is an appropriate vapor barrier utilized.

Some people are of the belief that they have to purchase “solid hardwood” to get real hardwood; this is a popular misconception.

Solid hardwood is milled normally from a piece of timber to ¾” thick and cannot be put directly on a concrete slab. If solid flooring is your choice, our ENMAR Hardwood Flooring Gilbert installers would first have to create a sub-floor that the solid wood could then be installed on top of.

The top layer or “wear layer” of engineered flooring can vary anywhere from below 2mm of thickness to very substantial 6mm thickness. When it comes to repairing Phoenix hardwood floors, depending on the thickness of the wear layer, engineered flooring can also be sanded and refinished if there is damage to the floor.
