8 Ways to Maintain Your Phoenix Hardwood Flooring

How to Care for Your Phoenix Hardwood Flooring

hardwood floor installation

We get asked a lot about what is the best method to take care of newly installed Phoenix hardwood flooring. Choosing hardwood flooring is an investment in your home, so here are some helpful tips from your friends at ENMAR Hardwood Flooring to keep your Phoenix hardwood flooring looking new and to provide longevity after your hardwood floor installation is complete.

  1. If it is a freshly sanded and refinished floor, do not place area rugs on your newly finished floor for one to two weeks to allow for complete curing of the finish.
  2. Sand, dirt and grit have abrasive particles; tracking these particles onto your Phoenix hardwood flooring will cause your finish to wear faster and make your floors lose their shine.
  3. An excessive amount of water can make your wood floors swell and cup. It can also cause cracks to turn discolor. Clean up any water on your floors as soon as possible.
  4. The nails of large pets can cause scratches on your Phoenix hardwood flooring, but there are products on the market that can be put on the nails of large pets (like a nail polish) that will reduce scratching or gouging. If your pet has an accident on the floor, clean it up immediately as urine is an acid and it will leave a permanent stain. How to maintain hardwood flooring
  5. After your hardwood floor installation, it is recommended that you use floor protectors under chair legs and other furniture to prevent scratching.
  6. Do NOT clean the floor with any wax related products, furniture polishes, vinegar, ammonia or pine cleaners. Not only are they less effective cleaners, they may dull your finish and it may require hardwood floor repair.
  7. Always make sure plants are in water proof containers.
  8. Whether it is prefinished hardwood flooring or solid hardwood flooring (reclaimed hardwood flooring), the humidity in your home is very important to your Phoenix hardwood flooring. Unless the relative humidity in your home is kept between 35% and 55%, the wood floor can check or shrink forming cracks in the surface.  An atmosphere that is too dry may also void the manufacturer’s warranty.

Is Engineered Hardwood Flooring “REAL” Hardwood?

Let’s talk a little bit about Engineered Hardwood

We have a lot of people who come to our ENMAR Hardwood Flooring Gilbert store wanting to buy hardwood flooring who have the misconception that engineered flooring is not real hardwood.

Let’s set the record straight on this: engineered hardwood flooring is real hardwood!!

Engineered flooring is real hardwood that has been bonded onto a substructure, normally a type of plywood. The plywood allows for greater structural integrity in your floor, and our engineered Gilbert hardwood flooring is more stable during changes in humidity.

When shopping for Phoenix hardwood flooring in today’s market, a large portion of what you are seeing is engineered flooring; this Phoenix hardwood flooring can be used on all levels in your home. Most homes here in Arizona are built on concrete slabs and the engineered flooring can be laid directly onto the concrete slab so long as there is an appropriate vapor barrier utilized.

Some people are of the belief that they have to purchase “solid hardwood” to get real hardwood; this is a popular misconception.

Solid hardwood is milled normally from a piece of timber to ¾” thick and cannot be put directly on a concrete slab. If solid flooring is your choice, our ENMAR Hardwood Flooring Gilbert installers would first have to create a sub-floor that the solid wood could then be installed on top of.

The top layer or “wear layer” of engineered flooring can vary anywhere from below 2mm of thickness to very substantial 6mm thickness. When it comes to repairing Phoenix hardwood floors, depending on the thickness of the wear layer, engineered flooring can also be sanded and refinished if there is damage to the floor.
